Saw this in a comment on a YouTube video (Notes From Along Kentucky Route Zero), and wanted to preserve it here. Some new info I'd never heard and references I hadn't noticed before! :)

For anybody interested, I emailed Cardboard Computers [sic] a while ago about their literary inspirations for the game, and this was their response:

"We also looked at magical realist writers, especially Isabel Allende's "The House of the Spirits," and Gabriel García Márquez's "100 Years of Solitude" & his short stories. You mentioned Tennesee Williams & Samuel Beckett -- both big influences, especially for "The Entertainment", along with Eugene O'Neill "The Iceman Cometh" & Maxim Gorky's "The Lower Depths".

Don DeLillo's "The Body Artist" is a personal favorite for its portrayals of art & artists, and ghosts. Also Jorge Luis Borges's storytelling technique of writing criticism for fictional artworks, stories like "An Examination of the Work of Herbert Quain", "The Approach to Al-Mu'tasim", or "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote." You can find those stories in the collection "Ficciones." We use this technique a lot in the game.

There's another Frost poem also on the subject of work, labor, and inequality which we reference in the game, called "Two Tramps in Mud Time" -- http://holyjoe.org/poetry/frost4.htm

Here are some literary/essay non-fiction recommendations from our research:

"What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia" by Elizabeth Catte

"Lethe: The Art and Critique of Forgetting" by Harald Weinrich

"The Weird and the Eerie" by Mark Fisher
